Q Station Sydney school excursion education programs explore the place, spaces and history of this heritage-listed site and National Park, located on North head and overlooking the magnificent Sydney Harbour. Spanning more than 150 years of Australian history, the 65 original buildings set on 35 hectares of bush land allow us to retrace the steps of those who have gone before to empathetically connect with the place and its many stories.
The stunning natural environment serves to remind us that long before the site was used as a Quarantine Station, it is acknowledged that the local Aboriginal people used Car-rang gel (North Head) as a special place for healing and teaching by the koradgee (wise ones). First contacts between the local Aboriginal people and the First Fleeters took place in nearby coves.
At Q Station we believe that children learn by doing. The educational school excursions for Primary children are focused on an exploration of the Quarantine Station site.
Meaning-making for these primary students comes through interaction with the place of the Quarantine Station, exploring the natural and built environment, handling artefacts, following paths of migration on large maps, experiencing past technologies, interacting with primary sources, playing games and hearing stories.
